Group Media Learning

Project Overview

In order to encourage you to find fun and meaningful ways to practice and improve your English, I will give you five small group projects this semester. You will complete these projects in a group. I will explain each project and give you time to complete it outside of class. The projects will involve things like chatting with friends, watching movies and listening to music.

Each project is worth 2.5 points. There will be 4 projects (10 points total). Each project will have a deadline and will include activities that you must complete with your group both outside of class and during class time. These projects are designed to be fun and will not be graded. If you complete the projects fully and on time, you will receive full points. It is only possible to lose points if you do not complete the work or do not complete it on time.

Project Deadlines

To be determined...

Project 1: Kakao Chat (2.5 points)

Near the beginning of the semester, you will form your group and begin your Kakao Chat. You must set time outside of class to complete your chatting. You should use your chat room/group to plan and discuss the assignments for this project. You should also have at least 3 chats/discussion on topics of your choice. You will submit your chats to me in class on the deadline day.

  • The entire Kakao chat must be in English Only.

  • You should create a chat group with all of the group members.

  • All members must be equally involved in the chatting.

  • You should decide your 3 discussion topics and submit them to me for approval.

  • You must show the chat to me in class so that I can see it was at least 30 minutes in total.

Project 2: Movie Review (2.5 points)

Outside of class you must watch a movie in English. You will write a short review of the movie, including a summary of the plot (story) and your opinion (thoughts/feelings/reaction) of the movie.

  • You will show your written review to me

  • You will share your review (speaking) in class in a group discussion

  • Every member in your group should choose a different movie

  • To get full points, you must write and share your review on the deadline day

Project 3: Music Sharing (2.5 points)

You will choose a song in English that you want to share with your group. You will make a listening exercise for your group to complete while listening to your song. You will also explain why you chose this song (Why is it important to you? Why do you like it? What do you think the song means?)

  • Every member in your group must choose a different song.

  • To get full points, you must create a listening exercise and share your thoughts on the song in class on the deadline day. You must also complete the listening exercise made by the other team members.

Project 4: News/Article Discussion (2.5 points)

You will find a news or other article on the internet that is of interest or important to you. You must print a copy of the article and bring it to class. You will lead a discussion of the article with your group.

  • You must print the article and bring it to class on the deadline day

  • You will also find 4 vocabulary in the article and put them in a vocabulary journal. You can see what a vocabulary journal looks like here.

*Students' Choice

If your group has other ideas for each of the projects, you can talk to me. If I approve your idea you may change the plan or work for each project. You will still be required to complete and submit your work at the same time as the rest of the class.

The Kakao Chat part of the project can not be changed.
