The Best Job in the World

Project Overview

This project is the final "test" in this semester. It is worth 30 points but it will be divided into 3 different parts. Some parts of the project require you to work in a group. In others, you will work alone. Each part is worth 10 points.

In the first part of the project, you will work with a group to create the best job in the world. You should decide together what you think the best job in the world would be. Will it be fun and exciting, extremely easy, high-paying, relaxing? You will create a print advertisement for the job and also give a group presentation about the job. Your goal is to prove to eveyone in the class, that your group ("company") has the best job in the world.

In the second part of the project, you will work by yourself. You will choose one of the jobs in the class (you can't choose your own, sorry) to apply to. You will write a cover letter and make a short video to show the company/group that you are the best person for the job.

At the end of the project, each group/company will choose the best applicant for their job. They will announce their decision to the class.

Project Dates:
Introduction

Introduction

In 2009, a tourism company in Australia really offered the best job in the world and asked people to apply by sending in a one minute video explaining why they would be the best for the job.

The job they offered was an "island caretaker". The winning applicant would only have to live on a tropical island and do very little work. This was actually an advertising plan to promote tourism to Australia.

Here are some powerpoint examples from other presentations. Do the slides provide all the needed information? Are they simple enough to understand but good at making the job look attractive?

Activity: Job Fair

After all groups (companies) present their jobs, we will have one class where the applicants have a chance to meet the companies and ask them questions about the job. This will help each of you decide which job you want to apply to. This is also one last chance for companies to impress potential applicants. Applicants should take notes about each job and company to help them make their decision.

Part 2

Part 2: Individual Work

Step 1: Choose a job to apply to

Decide which job you think is best for you. Consider the requirements/qualifications. Can you show that you have what the company wants? Are the benefits what you want in a job? Did the group's presentation make you interested and excited?

Step 2: Cover Letter (2 points - Homework)

Write a cover letter to the company/group. Explain to them why you are the best person for this job. Tell them about your skills, experience and related education. Prove to them that you are the person they are looking for.

You will write a draft in your book. The company will review and edit the cover letters of all their applicants. You can receive feedback on how to improve your application. You should apply this to your video application.

Video Application

Step 3: Video Resume/Application (15 points)

Just like the cover letter, you want to show the company/group that you are the most qualified and best applicant for their job. BE CREATIVE. Show your skills and qualities in a way that will be fun to watch. Impress the company.

The company will review and score the videos of all their applicants

Student Video Examples (click to view the video):

Do these videos do a good job of showing that the applicant is the best person for the job? Would you want to hire this person? Why or why not?

Conclusion

On the last day of class. Each group will announce which applicant they want to hire. I may give bonus points to outstanding work and/or effort by groups or applicants. This project is also a chance for you to impress me prove you deserve the grade that you want.
